Frequently Asked Questions:
1. Why use new tubes?
I believe the cost of NOS tubes versus their benefits is just not reasonable for the average player. If NOS tubes are your thing, I will gladly use them in your amplifier.
2. Are your amps exact replica's of old tweeds?
No. It is my goal to have all of the sound without ignoring modern circuit benefits. I think sound is more crucial than dead-on visual accuracy. I have added a bias pot to all fixed bias circuits. I have included a 1 ohm cathode resistor for easy tube biasing. I leave the ground switch unwired because it is unneccesary with a grounded plug. I use Weber speakers instead of Jensen's because I believe they are sonically superior. I also do not use CTS pots because their cost is not justifiable. I am however, always open to whatever changes or upgrades you would want in your amp.
3. Do you use carbon composition resistors?
Yes, I think C.C. resistors are a big part of the sound of older amplifiers. I use new manufacture C.C. resistors in all my builds. In some parts of the circuit (bias, power supply) I use metal film resistors for stability. This does not affect tone in my opinion.
4. Do you age your tweed?
After much consideration about the issue, I've decided to leave this as an option. I personally like the look of un-aged tweed. I've decided to let my own amps age naturally. If you gig at as many smoke filled bars as I do, this shouldn't take too long! I do however coat my cabinets in clear nitrocellulose lacquer as a standard. If aged tweed is something you would like, I will be happy to help.
5. Do you offer kits?
At this time, I don't offer any kits of the amplifiers I build. There are plenty of options out there for kits if you feel you want to build an amplifier. I believe in spending my time building these amps to the best of my abilities and believe offering kits would detract from my attention to detail.
6. Do you sell your amplifiers directly?
No. If you check on the order page, you will find links and phone numbers to my distributors who will gladly take your order and ship an amp to you. Please direct all orders to these distributors.
